Battle of the Scheldt Commemoration at Bergen Op Zoom on Zuidwest TV

The Netherlands town of Bergen op Zoom, home to a Canadian War Cemetery, holds an annual commemoration event, marking the anniversary of the Battle of the Scheldt and liberation. In 2020, because of the pandemic, the event took a different form, including a television broadcast and documentary by ZuidWest TV. In addition to remarks by Bergen op Zoom Mayor Frank Petter and a special message from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, there was an eloquent reading from The Hawk and the Hare, Janet Love Morrison’s novel based on the true story of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry in the final months of World War II.
